Project overview

Casa Terra is Mr. Vandit Jain's 1,800 square foot apartment in Gurugram, shaped around the idea that a compact home can feel richly composed without becoming visually heavy. The brief called for a contemporary interior with depth, warmth and a clear sense of arrival. Dark timber, natural stone, muted terracotta and sculptural furniture form the project's central vocabulary, while soft neutrals keep the atmosphere calm enough for daily family life. Rather than treating the apartment as a series of separate rooms, Studio GENESIS developed a continuous material story that moves from the entry through the living and dining spaces and into the more private rooms. The result is a home with a tactile, grounded character and enough visual restraint to remain comfortable over time.

The challenge

The central challenge was balancing a rich, dark palette with openness and visual lightness across a relatively compact apartment. Dark finishes can make a room feel smaller when they are applied without hierarchy, while too much visual brightness would have weakened the earthy identity the client wanted. Storage, circulation and furniture scale also had to be resolved together. The home needed to support ordinary routines, entertaining and quiet moments without filling the plan with isolated objects or oversized gestures. The design therefore had to create contrast through texture, reflection, proportion and light rather than relying on more colour.

Design approach

The design begins with a composed threshold that establishes Casa Terra's mood before opening into the social spaces. Crema Marfil marble gives the floor a quiet luminous base, while wenge joinery introduces depth at storage walls and key architectural edges. In the living room, sculptural seating is held against a restrained background so that curves and tactile upholstery become part of the architecture rather than decorative additions. Muted terracotta appears as a controlled accent in selected furniture, textiles and objects, giving the neutral palette a warmer register without turning the interior rustic. Sheer linen drapes filter the strong Gurugram daylight and soften the relationship between the apartment and its views. Matte chrome is used at touch points and lighting details to provide a cooler counterpoint to the timber and stone. During execution, the studio coordinated fixed joinery, lighting positions, curtain tracks and furniture clearances as one package, allowing the material transitions to align cleanly on site. Warm layered lighting then carries the composition into evening, with ambient sources, focused task light and gentle highlights on the stone and joinery. Casa Terra's luxury is ultimately built through continuity: every finish, edge and object supports the same calm, earthy direction.
