Project overview

The Surbhi Gupta Apartment in Greater Kailash II is a 2,900 square foot South Delhi home defined by editorial restraint. The client wanted a space that felt curated rather than decorated, where quality of execution and the relationship between elements created the sense of luxury. Studio GENESIS approached the apartment as a complete composition: the arrival sequence, storage, furniture, art, lighting and material transitions were developed together instead of being layered in isolation. The intention was not to make the home feel louder than its established neighbourhood context, but to give it a quiet confidence that would reveal itself through proportion, touch and use. A monochromatic base creates room for the client's objects and artwork to carry personality, while crafted joinery gives practical functions an architectural presence.

The challenge

The apartment is a mid-floor flat in an established South Delhi building, with the familiar limitations of a conventional envelope and fixed service infrastructure. The challenge was to create something exceptional without relying on structural drama or an excess of finishes. The plan needed to support arrival, entertaining, everyday family life and private retreat while keeping the visual field calm. Storage had to be generous but discreet, and the design needed to protect daylight and views rather than allowing new partitions or bulky cabinetry to consume them. Every decision was tested against the question of whether it improved the life of the apartment or merely added another visual statement.

Design approach

The existing interior was stripped back to its essential structure so the design could be rebuilt as one connected language. Calacatta marble establishes a light, reflective ground through the principal spaces, while lacquered MDF joinery creates precise planes for storage, display and concealed services. The monochromatic palette moves between whites, greys and black accents, but its depth comes from changes in sheen and texture: polished stone, painted surfaces, soft upholstery, textured walls and the filtered transparency of fluted glass. Fluted glass is used where privacy and borrowed light need to coexist, allowing spaces to remain visually connected without exposing every room at once. Matte black hardware gives the joinery a fine graphic edge and repeats quietly across the apartment rather than becoming a theme. Furniture and art were positioned as part of the architecture, with sightlines, wall proportions and lighting planned around them. During execution, joinery drawings, electrical points, glazing details and finish samples were coordinated before installation so that reveals and alignments remained consistent across the home. The final layer is deliberately spare: a few considered objects, warm evening light and enough negative space for the apartment to feel collected. Greater Kailash II is present in the project's restraint, but the result is personal rather than generic—a home where precision makes calm possible.
