Project overview

Mr. Harsh Sharma’s residence in Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab, is a landmark home for a multigenerational family that values both grandeur and warmth. Spread across 13,300 square feet, the brief called for a home capable of hosting large celebrations while remaining intimate and welcoming for everyday family life. The design began with a thorough study of how the family lives — morning routines, entertaining rhythms, the centrality of the Mandir as a daily gathering point, and the desire for an outdoor space that could serve as a private resort through Punjab’s long summer evenings.

The challenge

The central challenge was designing a single home that could serve radically different purposes without feeling fragmented. One floor hosts a dedicated party zone with a bar and lounge for large gatherings; another holds the private family rooms and a meditative contemporary Mandir. The grand double-height family lounge needed to feel celebratory yet human in scale. Every room — from the formal drawing room to the children’s bedrooms and terrace retreat — demanded the same depth of detailing, so no space felt like an afterthought within a home conceived at this scale.

Design approach

Studio GENESIS worked through a modern contemporary language anchored in clean geometry, natural materials, and carefully layered lighting. The entrance sequence is the first act of the narrative: a double-height foyer with polished stone floors, a sculptural staircase with solid timber treads and brushed-metal balustrades, and feature lighting that announces arrival with confidence. The double-height family lounge is anchored by a continuous stone feature wall and a ceiling design that draws the eye upward while maintaining warmth through recessed timber elements and amber-toned lighting. The party zone operates as a distinct spatial episode — bolder materiality, statement bar joinery in dark timber and brass, and controlled theatrical lighting. The contemporary Mandir is detailed in white stone and warm oak, with a recessed deity niche, an integrated meditation seat, and diffused lighting calibrated for contemplative use. The terrace is designed as an outdoor room: landscaped planters, a shaded seating pavilion, and ambient lighting that extends the home’s livability through every season. Every finish — from textured plaster on bedroom walls to brushed metal on door hardware — was selected as part of a coherent material narrative.
