Project overview

Mr. Anupam Mittal’s apartment in Gurugram occupies 2,500 square feet in a high-rise tower. The client is a discerning collector with a background in aesthetics — he wanted a home that felt genuinely curated, where every design decision was visible and intentional, but without the coldness that can afflict highly styled apartments. The home needed to support a working professional’s lifestyle while housing an art collection and functioning as a relaxed, welcoming space for family and guests.

The challenge

The apartment plan presented a conventional cellular layout — a sequence of enclosed rooms without a strong spatial narrative linking them. The challenge was to create a sense of journey and composition within a fixed structure: to open the social zone, establish visual connections between living and dining, and introduce architectural character through mouldings and joinery without increasing the apparent complexity of the space. Equally important was balancing the client’s sophisticated taste for detail — wall mouldings, considered joinery, precision lighting — with the warmth and comfort required for everyday family use.

Design approach

The design opened the social zone to create a flowing living and dining sequence connected by Bianco marble flooring. Wall mouldings in a contemporary flush profile — with shadow reveals at panel junctions — provide architectural character without heavy ornamentation. Furniture selections prioritise sculptural quality: a curved sofa in warm bouclé, a stone-topped dining table with turned-metal legs, and side tables in dark smoked oak and antique brass. The art collection is integrated into the moulding grid rather than hung conventionally, giving each piece a considered position within the spatial composition. Private areas transition to dark smoked oak flooring, silk plaster walls, and layered linen textiles for a warmer, more enveloping quality. Lighting throughout moves from ambient to task to accent — warm LED sources recessed within the moulding grid, wall sconces for reading, and focused accent lighting for the artwork. The result is an apartment where sophistication and comfort coexist: refined in its details, deeply livable in its character.
