Why Arches Still Belong in Contemporary Homes
By Team GENESIS · 2026-06-25
The contemporary arch is valuable not as a trend, but as a way to soften movement, frame views and give transitions a distinct character.
An arch changes the way a person experiences a threshold. It slows the eye, gives a doorway a sense of arrival and introduces a softer geometry into a room otherwise governed by straight lines.
The proportion of the opening matters more than the fact that it is curved. A shallow arch can feel quiet and architectural, while a taller opening can create a strong ceremonial connection between spaces. The width, depth and surrounding wall should be resolved together.
Arches can also support practical planning. They can conceal storage, frame a view toward a courtyard or connect formal and family areas without needing a full door. In apartments, a carefully placed arch can make a renovation feel integrated rather than applied.
Used with restraint, the arch becomes part of the home’s structure. It does not need to announce a style; it only needs to make movement feel considered.
