Renovating an Apartment Without Losing Its Best Light
By Team GENESIS · 2026-04-20
The best apartment renovations protect daylight and views first, then use planning, finishes and borrowed light to strengthen them.
Daylight is one of an apartment’s most valuable assets, and it is easy to reduce it through poorly placed storage, opaque partitions or heavy window treatments. Existing light paths should be mapped before the plan is changed.
Where privacy is needed, filtered solutions can preserve brightness. Fluted glass, sheer curtains, open shelving and high-level openings often work better than a full-height opaque wall.
Reflective but controlled surfaces can carry light deeper into the plan. Pale walls, a considered ceiling and a clear route through the living area help, while excessive gloss can create glare and visual fatigue.
Renovation should improve the apartment’s relationship with daylight rather than simply add more artificial light. The difference is felt in energy, mood and the changing character of the rooms.
