7 Questions to Ask Before Hiring an Interior Design Studio

By Team GENESIS · 2026-08-12

Knowing how to choose an interior designer starts with asking about process, scope, communication, budgets, execution and the decisions that happen after the moodboard.

7 Questions to Ask Before Hiring an Interior Design Studio

The right interior design studio is not selected by images alone. A portfolio shows a studio’s visual language, but a home is also a long sequence of decisions, site visits, revisions, procurement and coordination. Before hiring, ask how the studio works when the brief becomes more specific than a reference image.

First, ask what the studio is responsible for from concept to handover. Clarify whether the scope includes drawings, approvals, quotations, vendor coordination, site supervision, furniture, styling, snagging and post-handover support. Then ask how the fee is structured and which items are included, excluded or provisional.

Third, ask how decisions are documented. A good process should make room layouts, material samples, drawings, budgets and change approvals easy to understand. Fourth, ask who will be the day-to-day contact and how often the site and review meetings happen. Continuity matters because a home should not have to be repeatedly re-explained.

Finally, ask for examples of difficult moments: a delayed material, a site condition that changed, a budget revision or a decision the studio advised against. The answer reveals more than a perfect final photograph. You are choosing a partner for judgement, communication and execution as much as for taste.
