How to Place Artwork in a Family Home
By Team GENESIS · 2026-05-20
Artwork feels integrated when its scale, sightline, lighting and relationship to furniture are designed as part of the room.
Art should be placed for the people who live with it, not only for the camera. Sightlines from entry, seating and circulation help determine whether a piece becomes a daily encounter or disappears into a wall.
Scale is the first practical decision. A small work can hold a niche or side table, while a large painting may need a quiet wall and enough distance to be read. The furniture below it should feel related without becoming a measuring device.
Lighting should reveal texture and colour without glare. Adjustable accents, a soft wash or carefully placed daylight can each work depending on the medium and the room’s use.
The home does not need to be filled with art. A few works with personal meaning, given the right space and care, can create more character than a crowded collection.
