Designing Outdoor Living for an Urban Residence

By Team GENESIS · 2026-04-05

Urban outdoor rooms feel generous when landscape, shade, privacy and interior circulation are treated as one design problem.

Designing Outdoor Living for an Urban Residence

A terrace, balcony or garden can extend a home’s usable area, but only if it feels connected to everyday movement. The strongest outdoor spaces are reached naturally from the rooms that use them most.

Privacy and shade are essential in dense urban settings. Planting, screens, pergolas and changes in level can create enclosure without blocking all light or air. The right degree of openness depends on the view and the time of day.

Outdoor furniture and finishes need to handle weather and maintenance. Drainage, storage, irrigation and lighting should be coordinated before the decorative planting is finalised.

When the boundary between inside and outside is designed carefully, the outdoor room becomes part of the home’s daily rhythm rather than an occasional backdrop.
