Designing an Entry Sequence for a Large Residence

Arrival is a sequence of threshold, pause, view and movement; it should introduce the home without revealing everything at once.
The entrance sets the emotional register of a home before a visitor reaches the living room. A compressed threshold can make the next space feel generous, while a framed view or material change can create a quiet sense of arrival.
Practical needs belong in the sequence too. Shoes, keys, bags, security, lighting and weather protection should be resolved so the foyer remains composed during the busiest moments of the day.
In a large residence, the entry can introduce the main material language without using every material at once. A stone floor, timber screen, artwork or planted view can establish a thread that continues into the home.
The most memorable entrance is not necessarily the grandest. It is the one that makes the transition from outside to inside feel clear, comfortable and personal.
