How to Use Classic Details Without Making a Home Feel Overly Ornate

Mouldings, arches and symmetry can create refinement when they are edited carefully and balanced with contemporary furniture and light.
Classical detailing works because it gives a room proportion, order and a sense of continuity. It becomes heavy when every surface makes the same decorative claim. The design question is not whether to use mouldings or arches, but where they should carry the composition.
A contemporary classic interior often pairs one strong architectural gesture with quieter surfaces. An arch can frame a threshold, a cornice can resolve a tall room, and wall panelling can bring rhythm to a long passage without turning the home into a period set.
Furniture, artwork and lighting provide the counterpoint. Clean-lined seating, restrained hardware and directional light keep the room connected to the present. The contrast makes both the classical detail and the modern objects feel more intentional.
Editing is the final craft. A few correctly proportioned details are more luxurious than a catalogue of applied ornament.
