Choosing Marble for a Home: Look Beyond the Swatch
By Team GENESIS · 2026-06-19
Marble selection involves movement, finish, scale, maintenance and installation—not just choosing the most dramatic slab in a showroom.
A marble sample can be persuasive and still be misleading. The full slab reveals the movement, density and colour variation that will shape a floor, wall or counter. It should be viewed in the light conditions of the project whenever possible.
The intended use determines the finish and tolerance for variation. Honed stone has a softer reflection than polished stone, while a textured finish can provide grip outdoors. Porosity, sealing, edge details and cleaning routines should be discussed before the purchase is final.
Bookmatching and vein direction are design decisions, not installation afterthoughts. A drawing that sets out the slabs can avoid awkward cuts and allow the stone’s natural movement to support the room’s geometry.
The most beautiful marble is not necessarily the loudest. A stone that belongs to the scale, light and everyday use of the home will age with more confidence.
